Raising Attainment in MFL: Supporting SEND and Disadvantaged Learners to Succeed

Overview

This session will provide practical, classroom-focused strategies to support vulnerable learners in achieving success in GCSE MFL, with a particular focus on SEND students and those eligible for pupil premium. Drawing on inclusive teaching approaches and evidence-informed practice, the CPD will explore how to remove barriers to learning and enable all students to maximise their potential in speaking and writing.  

Our Aims

  • To develop understanding of the specific barriers faced by SEND and disadvantaged learners in MFL and how these impact progress and attainment  
  • To equip teachers with practical, inclusive strategies to support fluency, confidence, vocabulary retention and written accuracy for vulnerable students.  
  • To explore effective scaffolding and adaptive teaching approaches that enable all learners to access and succeed in GCSE assessment tasks.  
  • To build confidence in raising attainment by addressing common challenges and embedding strategies that promote equity and progress for all learners.

Emily Knowles

Emily Knowles is Head of MFL at Parkside Academy, with a strong track record of raising attainment across key stages. She brings extensive expertise in curriculum leadership, inclusive classroom practice and improving outcomes for vulnerable learners. As an AQA Writing Examiner, Emily has an in-depth knowledge of assessment criteria and what drives success at different grade levels.
