Principles of Working with Individuals with Learning Disabilities

Overview

The Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Working with Individuals with Learning Disabilities develops essential knowledge and understanding of supporting individuals with learning disabilities across care, education, and support settings. The programme explores key concepts including types of learning disabilities, person-centred approaches, communication methods, dignity, inclusion, rights, legislation, and safeguarding. Learners also consider how to promote independence, wellbeing, and positive outcomes through respectful and effective support.  

Delivered through a flexible online model, learners can enrol at any time and complete the qualification over 12 weeks. Support is provided by a dedicated lecturer, with portfolio-based assessment across multiple units leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

Time: 12 weeks 

Cost: This course is funded for residents of the North East Combined Authority (NECA) area, which includes: County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland and Sunderland. 

Our Aims

  • Equip staff with essential knowledge of working with individuals with learning disabilities, including understanding different types of learning disabilities, the principles of person-centred practice, communication approaches, safeguarding, rights, legislation, and the importance of dignity, inclusion, and equality in care and support settings.  
  • Build confidence and competence in supporting individuals with learning disabilities, enabling participants to recognise individual needs, reduce barriers to inclusion, use appropriate communication strategies, and promote independence, wellbeing, and positive outcomes in everyday practice.  
  • Promote inclusive, respectful, and person-centred practice, ensuring staff understand the importance of valuing individuality, working in partnership with individuals and families, and applying consistent approaches that support choice, empowerment, and social inclusion.  
  • Empower staff to apply inclusive approaches in their roles, using their knowledge to enhance support, improve communication, contribute to high-quality care and education practices, and strengthen whole-setting approaches to supporting individuals with learning disabilities.
