Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs  

Overview

The Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) develops knowledge and confidence in supporting children and young people with a range of additional needs. It covers key areas including child and young person development, types of SEND, inclusive and person-centred practice, partnership working with families and professionals, and relevant legislation, policies, and safeguarding responsibilities.  

The course is delivered online with flexible enrolment and can be completed in 12 weeks. Learners are supported by a dedicated lecturer throughout. Assessment is portfolio-based across five units, leading to a nationally recognised qualification that supports progression in education and care settings.

Time: 12 weeks 

Cost: This course is fully funded for residents of the North East Combined Authority (NECA) area, which includes: County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland and Sunderland.

Our Aims

  • Equip staff with essential SEND knowledge, including understanding a range of special educational needs and disabilities, child and young person development, inclusive and person-centred approaches, and the legislation, policies, and safeguarding responsibilities that underpin effective SEND practice. 
  • Build confidence and competence in supporting learners with SEND, enabling participants to recognise barriers to learning, understand individual needs, apply inclusive strategies, and support positive educational, social, and emotional outcomes for children and young people in a variety of educational settings. 
  • Promote inclusive and effective practice, ensuring staff understand the importance of creating accessible learning environments, working collaboratively with families and professionals, supporting individual learning needs, and contributing to a culture where all learners can achieve their potential. 
  • Empower staff to play active role in supporting learners with SEND, using their knowledge to enhance classroom practice, contribute to inclusion strategies, follow statutory guidance, and strengthen whole-school approaches to supporting children and young people.
