Overview
This course develops essential knowledge and understanding of behaviour that challenges and how it can be influenced by emotional, social, environmental, and communication factors. The programme explores key concepts; functions of behaviour, triggers and underlying causes, impact of relationships and environments, and the principles of positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies. Learners will consider how consistent, supportive approaches can help reduce challenging behaviour and promote positive outcomes in educational and care settings.

Cost: This course is funded for residents of the North East Combined Authority (NECA) area, which includes: County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland and Sunderland. ted in 12 weeks. Learners receive support from a dedicated lecturer and assessed through a portfolio across multiple units.
Our Aims
- Equip staff with essential knowledge of behaviour that challenges, including understanding potential causes and triggers, the functions of behaviour, the influence of communication needs, emotional regulation, and the impact of relationships and environments on behaviour in educational settings.
- Build confidence and competence in responding to behaviour that challenges, enabling participants to identify underlying needs, apply positive behaviour support strategies, use effective de-escalation techniques, and promote calm, safe, and supportive responses in everyday practice.
- Promote consistent, positive, and reflective behaviour support practice, ensuring staff understand the importance of creating predictable environments, building positive relationships, and using proactive strategies that support emotional regulation and reduce the likelihood of challenging behaviour.
- Empower staff to apply behaviour support approaches in their roles, using their knowledge to strengthen interactions, improve behaviour management, support inclusion and wellbeing, and contribute to a whole-school culture of positive behaviour and emotional safety.
