Level 2 Certificate Understanding Autism
Overview
The Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism develops essential knowledge and understanding of autism and how it can affect individuals across communication, interaction, behaviour, and sensory processing. The programme explores key concepts including the characteristics of autism, communication differences, sensory processing needs, and how autism can influence learning and daily life. Learners also consider the importance of person-centred and inclusive approaches and how supportive environments can reduce barriers and promote positive outcomes for autistic individuals.
The course is delivered through a flexible online model over 12 weeks, with portfolio-based assessment and dedicated lecturer support leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

Cost: This course is funded for residents of the North East Combined Authority (NECA) area, which includes: County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland and Sunderland.
Our Aims
- Equip staff with essential knowledge of autism, including understanding the characteristics of autism, differences in communication and interaction, sensory processing needs, and the principles of person-centred and inclusive practice within educational settings.
- Build confidence and competence in supporting autistic individuals, enabling participants to recognise individual needs, understand behaviour as communication, reduce barriers to learning, and apply appropriate strategies that promote engagement, wellbeing, and positive outcomes.
- Promote inclusive, respectful, and supportive practice, ensuring staff understand the importance of adapting environments and approaches, using clear communication, and creating consistent, predictable routines that support accessibility and participation.
- Empower staff to apply autism-informed approaches in their roles, using their knowledge to enhance interactions, strengthen inclusion, support emotional wellbeing, and contribute to a whole-school culture that values neurodiversity and meets the needs of all learners.
