Level 2 Award Introduction to Neuroscience in Early Years

Overview

The Level 2 Award Introduction to Neuroscience in Early Years develops essential knowledge and understanding of early brain development and how neuroscience can inform practice with babies and young children from birth to seven years. The programme explores key concepts including brain development, emotional regulation, the social brain, and the impact of relationships, experiences, and environments on learning, behaviour, and wellbeing. Learners also consider how neuroscience can be applied to support positive interactions and improve developmental outcomes in early years and educational settings.

The course is delivered through a flexible online model over 12 weeks, with portfolio-based assessment across two units and dedicated lecturer support leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

Date: Enrol with ALP Institute by 30.09.26

Time: 12 weeks

Cost: This course is funded for residents of the North East Combined Authority (NECA) area, which includes: County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland and Sunderland.

Our Aims

  • Equip staff with essential knowledge of early brain development and neuroscience in early years, including understanding how the brain develops from birth to seven years, the impact of relationships and experiences on development, emotional regulation, the social brain, and how neuroscience informs effective early years practice.
  • Build confidence and competence in applying neuroscience to practice, enabling participants to understand children’s behaviour and development, support self-regulation, and use evidence-informed approaches to enhance learning, wellbeing, and emotional development in early years and educational settings.
  • Promote informed, consistent, and reflective early years practice, ensuring staff understand the importance of secure relationships, supportive environments, and responsive interactions in promoting cognitive, social, and emotional development and improving outcomes for young children.
  • Empower staff to apply neuroscience understanding in their roles, using their knowledge to enhance daily interactions, support positive behaviour and development, contribute to effective early years provision, and strengthen whole-setting approaches to supporting babies and young children.
