Leading Teaching and Learning (Secondary)

Overview

This programme of training will focus on how leaders at senior level can empower, support and develop middle leadership in their setting, so that T&L is being driven forward at all levels of leadership. The course will focus on how to train middle leaders to understand the difference between leadership and management, how to develop accountability and how to drive improvement forward on an individual teacher level. There will also be training around utilising professional development time and building a sustainable professional development curriculum for middle leaders. 

Our Aims

  • To reflect on the role of a senior leader in developing middle leadership 
  • To develop a professional development curriculum for middle leaders so that T&L improvement is driven forward at all levels. 
  • To understand and respond to the nuanced difference between leadership and management and ensure this is role modelled in a senior role to improve the leadership of subject areas.

Julie Hurst
Deputy Headteacher at Hummersknott Academy

Julie Hurst

Julie Hurst is the Deputy Headteacher at Hummersknott Academy, leading on Teaching and Learning. Julie has been an English teacher within ALP for 14 years and started her career as an NQT at Parkside Academy in 2011. Julie progressed through various leadership roles at Parkside including Subject Leader for English, Assistant Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. She has delivered several leadership courses for ALP including a focused ‘Leadership in Action’ course as well as ‘Creating a Coaching Culture’. Julie is a qualified Assessor Coach with expertise in Instructional Coaching in particular. She also currently facilitates the NPQLT for Best Practice Network, supporting colleagues across the North East with the leadership and development of teaching.
