Ceramic Techniques and Surface Decoration

Overview

This workshop focuses on using natural materials to inspire clay work. We will look at core techniques such as pinch pots and slab construction, then experiment by altering shapes—stretching, carving, or combining forms. Using items such as leaves, shells, and bark to press into clay, creating detailed textures and patterns. These impressions form the basis for tiles, bowls, or small sculptures, encouraging observational skills and tactile exploration. The outcome is a range of organic, textured pieces that celebrate nature and process.

Our Aims

  • Develop understanding of core clay techniques Teachers will refine skills in pinch pot and slab construction as a foundation for classroom practice.
  • Explore creative manipulation of form Participants will experiment with altering shapes through stretching, carving, and combining to create more expressive outcomes.
  • Investigate natural textures and pattern-making Teachers will use materials like leaves, shells, and bark to create detailed surface impressions in clay.
  • Enhance observational and tactile learning approaches The session will promote ways to engage students through close observation of natural forms and hands-on exploration.
