Bridging the Gap: Writing Expectations Across KS2 and KS3

Overview

This collaborative CPD session will explore how primary and secondary colleagues can work together to develop a clearer, more consistent understanding of writing expectations across KS2 and KS3. Through discussion, exemplification and shared practice, delegates will examine the transition from Year 6 to Year 7, considering both the strengths pupils bring from primary school and the challenges they face as writers in secondary classrooms.

By the end of the session, participants will have a stronger understanding of cross-phase expectations and a shared approach to supporting pupils in becoming successful, confident writers throughout transition and beyond.

Our Aims

· Develop a shared understanding of writing expectations across KS2 and KS3.

· Explore the strengths, knowledge and writing habits pupils bring from primary into secondary education.

· Examine progression in writing skills, including organisation, vocabulary, technical accuracy and writer’s craft.

· Compare examples of pupil writing to establish clearer cross-phase standards and expectations.

· Discuss practical strategies to support continuity, confidence and progress in student writing from Year 6 to Year 7.

· Strengthen collaboration between primary and secondary colleagues to improve writing outcomes across transition.
